FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How do you prevent dust and hairs from sticking into your paint?
(In answer to an email.)
Hmm yes dust,
... I don't know how to prevent dust from getting in your painting. I also get
this. Sometimes I use compressed air (from a compressor, like for an airbrush)
to blow out the dust, sand or brush hairs. This works well. Sometimes shifts the
paint across the panel a bit, so be careful or repair afterwards.
As for hairs from your brush: before starting to paint with a new brush, I pull out
as many hairs as I can to get rid of the loose ones. A friend of mine also advised me
to let a new brush soke in linseed oil for a night. Haven't tried that yet...
Some 17th century dutch painters have been said to moisten the floor of their
studio before each painting session to prevent dust from getting airborne. I haven't tried that either. But I do seem
to have more of a dust problem after having moved from a studio with carpets on the
floor to a studio with a linoleum floor. I think dust sticks to a carpet, whereas
from a linoleum floor it blows up into the air easily...
